2023 is nearly over. Christmas is almost here and as we reflect on Christ’s birth and what that means for us Christians, it allows us to reflect on the year that has been.

For many, it may have been a year of blessing and great spiritual, emotional and personal growth. But for others, it may have been quite the opposite. Personally, 2023 has been quite exhausting. We have had so many life changes and career changes this year that it has been draining. Starting the year off with promise as a youth and young adult’s pastor was encouraging. While this ended prematurely, I’m thankful for the opportunity God provided.

More recently I have been working in the funeral industry and it has been deeply challenging to walk with families through their moments of grief throughout the latter portion of this year. I have seen firsthand the pain that the loss of a loved one brings a family and being able to provide support and guidance for starting the journey of life without their loved one is a real honour.

As I reflect on the year that has been, I’m aware of the importance of giving God the glory and thanks for what He has provided. As the Creator of all we know, God is fully sovereign and while we may not fully understand why everything occurs in our lives, we know that He is in control and everything has a purpose. The beauty of the Christian faith is that we can have a personal friendship with God who provides purpose and meaning for all we say and do. We can find peace in the midst of the storms of life, knowing that some form of good will come out of all we face.

As we journey towards a new year, I’m taking time to reflect and refresh my soul in Christ. Every day has enough drama and trouble, so where possible, we need to take time to refresh and realign ourselves with God’s will. I’m reminded of Jesus’ many instances of doing the same:

“In these days he went out to the mountain to pray, and all night he continued in prayer to God.”

Luke 6:12 ESV.

Jesus’ focus was on His relationship with His Father. Everything He did in his earthly ministry flowed from this relationship. In true followers of Christ fashion, we too ought to be doing the same. But this shouldn’t be from a sense of obligation. It really needs to be a desire to commune and have friendship from God. If this isn’t something you currently have, pray that God will grow that desire within you! There can be no greater thing than a growth in desire to worship our God. If you’re still thinking about a resolution for the New Year, perhaps prayer for growth in this area is something you could consider.

We may not know what 2024 may hold for each of us, but we can know that God is in control and whatever my come, He’ll use for the benefit of growing God’s Kingdom here on earth.

May your Christmas season and New Years be blessed.
