A Great Reward

We live in an instant world. We seek answers to all our questions and generally speaking, we get them quickly. The world is fast-paced, and we easily find ourselves swept up in its current. If we’re not careful, we overload ourselves with busyness, and the waters become too deep – leading to fatigue or even burnout. I’ve certainly experienced this.

As we go about our daily activities, it’s easy to be bogged down in the mire. If we have a spare moment to think, we can question the validity of where God has placed us. Lately I’ve been wondering why God hasn’t moved me into where I believe He’s leading. Perhaps you’re not questioning in this way, perhaps instead, you resonate with the writer of Ecclesiastes:

“Meaningless! Meaningless!”
says the Teacher.
“Utterly meaningless!
Everything is meaningless.”

Ecclesiastes 1:2 NIV.

In our journey through life, it helps to look ahead. In the words of Paul: “forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead” (Philippians 3:13b ESV). But what is it that lies ahead of us? Why should a Christian yearn for the future? And perhaps more importantly, why should a Christian have hope? After all, isn’t everything in this life meaningless?

Quite contrary.

For those of us whom God has called to be His Children through the nudgings of the Holy Spirit, death is not the end. There will be a resurrection. We will be reunited with Christ, and the fullness of our transformation into Christlikeness will be fulfilled. We will receive the “crown of righteousness” (2 Timothy 4:8) when we hear God say: “Well done, my good and faithful servant” (Matthew 25:23).

Are you looking forward to that day? Are you living as though every day leads toward that moment? Is Jesus Christ your all-in-all? In the words of the late Timothy Keller:

Jesus Christ must become your overmastering positive passion.

Timothy Keller, Gospel in Life, 54.
